The Department of Psychology’s doctoral program in Clinical Psychology (CSP) has been reaccredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) through 2035. The 10-year period is the maximum term given by the association and was granted following a comprehensive and rigorous process that included a self-study, site visit and curriculum review.

“Accreditation is a vital process in clinical psychology, and we are proud that our program has been accredited by the American Psychological Association for more than five decades,” said Associate Professor and Clinical Training Director Anthony Papa, who led the reaccreditation effort. “This recognition affirms that our program prepares clinical psychologists to excel at the highest standards of professional practice – in clinical care, administration, supervision, research and teaching – across the many public and private institutions that serve the people of Hawaiʻi and beyond. APA accreditation also ensures that our graduates are qualified to pursue licensure in every state and to serve in the VA and other federal agencies nationwide.”

CSP is a full-time, 5-year program that integrates science and practice to enhance psychological knowledge, health and well-being. Its main goal is to equip graduates with skills to alleviate human suffering through an integrative psychological clinical science approach.

The program enrolls highly qualified students in cohorts designed to foster peer collaboration, mentorship, and professional development. Faculty members are recognized as dedicated role models committed to student success.

Since its establishment in the Fall of 1970, the program has graduated more than 200 clinical psychologists who have gone on to careers as clinicians, administrators, and supervisors in hospitals, mental health centers, private practice and other health service settings, as well as teachers and researchers at universities and research hospitals in Hawaiʻi and across the country. CSP currently has 31 students enrolled.

Accredited by APA since 1972, the program’s next site visit is scheduled for 2035.

The Department of Psychology, housed in the College of Social Sciences, offers a broad understanding of behavior exhibited in developmental, social, and environmental situations. Students learn methods and concepts across a range of psychological disciplines which serves to foster an appreciation for the diversity of the human experience. Its major academic areas include: behavioral neuroscience, clinical, cognition, community/cultural, developmental and social.
