Communication and Information

The School of Communication and Information (SCI) examines communication and the flow of information among people and communities, including face-to-face conversations and dynamic interactions via media and emerging technologies. Teaching, research and practice in the SCI embraces the contemporary challenges of complex, multicultural contexts. Its programs include Communication, Communicology, Journalism, Library and Information Science, and Peace and Conflict Education.

Specialties

  • Communication focuses on information and communication technologies and policy, communication in social, organizational and professional communities and the media arts.
  • Communicology addresses human communication processes, and is organized around three focal areas: creating understanding, interpersonal relationships and persuasion/social influence, with an emphasis on how people communicate as members of different cultures and groups.
  • Journalism cultivates the ability to gather, analyze and organize information, and to communicate it clearly and responsibly through print, broadcast and online media.
  • Library and Information Science focuses on connecting people with information through services and systems that provide access to knowledge in libraries, archives and other information environments.
  • Peace and Conflict Education advances scholarship in peace studies, including human rights and advocacy, leadership and governance and policy analysis, as well as practical conflict management and facilitation skills.
