Here at the College, students find a supportive network of faculty, staff and fellow students ready to help at ACCESS, short for Advising, Civic and Community Engagement in the Social Sciences. Here they’ll find the people, resources and tools they need to succeed and thrive at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa!
Undergraduate Academic Advising
From the moment students walk through the doors at CSS, ACCESS Advising is here to guide them on their academic journey. Through one-on-one meetings with academic advisors, they’ll develop customized educational plans that match their interests, skills and abilities with their career and life goals, and sets them on the path to success.
Their educational plans will incorporate the classes they’ll need for graduation, as well as learning experiences outside the classroom, such as internships and service learning.

Student Engagement
ACCESS Student Engagement serves as the gateway to hands-on learning opportunities that help CSS students integrate theoretical and classroom teaching with real world experiences. Through internships, mentorships and other similar opportunities, they’ll build their resume, network with professionals and get a head start in their chosen field.
Student Engagement Opportunities:
- Network with peers and professionals;
- Cultivate leadership and critical thinking skills;
- Integrate academic theory with real world experience.
Civic Engagement
Students searching for ways to make a difference in the community will find their answer at ACCESS Civic Engagement. From intergenerational projects and community activities to sustainability projects, ACCESS Civic Engagement offers students the opportunity to become change agents while developing critical skills, knowledge and values that will prepare them to assume leadership roles throughout their lives.
Civic Engagement Offers:
- Service-learning programs and sites (pedagogical high-impact practice);
- Courses and programs supporting primary community research and service learning;
- Research and professional development opportunities for faculty and students within CSS, as well as other colleges and institutions of higher education.
Global Experiences
For students looking to enhance their global perspective through new experiences, ACCESS can also put them in touch with resources such as the National Student Exchange, Mānoa International Exchange or the Study Abroad Center. It’s a great way to make friends from around the world and connect to life beyond the university.
ACCESS Lounge
CSS students looking for a place to gather, engage, study, meet and learn with other CSS students can meet at the ACCESS Lounge in Dean Hall, Rooms 5-6. A home base to several CSS student clubs, it’s a great place to connect.
