Each year, the College of Social Sciences honors outstanding faculty and staff with awards of excellence in scholarship, application, leadership and service. These awards celebrate the efforts of exemplary individuals who go above and beyond in support of the College’s commitment to serve as a driving force in academics, research and community enhancement.
“The College of Social Sciences is proud to recognize this year’s recipients of the CSS Awards of Excellence,” said Denise Eby Konan, dean. “These individuals are the backbone of the College and make it possible to provide engaging and transformational experiences for our students. We are appreciative of our 2022 awardees and their dedication to the College and our students.”
This year’s recipients were announced at the CSS Aloha Reception and include:
Award for Excellence in Teaching highlights the importance of high quality teaching and recognizes outstanding performances by faculty as teachers.
- Ethan Caldwell, assistant professor, Ethnic Studies.
- Heoli Osorio, assistant professor, Political Science.
Award for Excellence in Research recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding work in the scholarship of research.
- Ashley Rubin, associate professor, Sociology.
- Manfred Steger, professor, Sociology.
Award for Excellence in Service honors staff members who apply their professional expertise to improve the operation of their unit and the College.
- Stacie Hanai, administrative officer, Dean’s Office.
Award for Distinguished Retired Faculty recognizes outstanding faculty members who have retired from the University but have continued to maintain an active and outstanding scholarly life.
- James Mak, emeritus professor of Economics and UHERO research fellow.
Also acknowledged at the event was Stephanie Teves (associate professor, chair; Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies) who received the 2022 University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research and Creative Work. The award recognizes faculty mentors who have shown dedicated and sustained excellence in faculty mentoring of undergraduate students in their research and creative work endeavors.
