New Department Chairs

Recognized for excellence

Each year, UH Board of Regents honors the leadership and service of faculty, staff and students committed to enhancing the university’s mission of excellence. Three 2020-2021 awardees are from CSS.

Mary Mostafanezhad, associate professor, Department of Geography & Environment, won a Medal for Excellence in Teaching for “extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students.”

Heewon Kwon, a PhD candidate in the Department of Psychology, earned the Frances Davis Award for dedication and demonstrated excellence as a teacher of undergraduate students. She works with faculty member Joni Sasaki in the Cognition, Neuroscience and Social Program.

Victor Kilonzo, a senior double majoring in psychology and molecular cell biology, accepted the Student Excellence in Research Award for outstanding scholarly research endeavors by a student pursuing a degree at the doctoral, master’s or bachelor’s level.

A media ethics maven

Ann Auman, a journalism professor in the School of Communications with more than 30 years of teaching experience, was awarded the 2021 Teaching Excellence Award in the Media Ethics Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Jiang receives Fulbright Scholar award

Congratulations to Geography and Environment Associate Professor Hong Jiang, who was awarded a Fulbright Scholar award for research on tea cultures in Taiwan for the Fall 2021 semester.

Authorship accomplishment

Congratulations to Sociology Associate Professor Ashley T. Rubin on the publication of her second book, Rocking Qualitative Social Science: An Irreverent Guide to Rigorous Research (Stanford Press).

PhD graduate receives UCLA appointment

The University of California, Los Angeles, has announced that Stephen Acabado, an associate professor in the department of anthropology, was appointed director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the UCLA International Institute. He earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in Anthropology at UH Mānoa.
