LIS faculty earns national history award
Associate Professor Andrew Wertheimer is the inaugural winner of the Distinguished Service in Library History Award from the American Library Association Library History Round Table. Werthheimer is an associate professor in the Library and Information Science Program in the School of Communication and Information.
An Obama Foundation Leader
Patrick Tiʻa Reid, who earned a bachelor of arts from the Department of Political Science, is an inaugural fellow of the Obama Foundation Leaders USA program. The six-month program focuses on emerging leaders, ages 24-45, “who aim to drive systems-level change across sectors and issues, and have at least three years of demonstrated impact.” Reid is the public policy advisor to the American Samoa Government’s Office of the Governor.
Acknowledgment from Palau President
The Waikīkī Prince Hotel recently welcomed attendees to the 32nd Annual Conference and 16th Emerging Leaders Program of the Northeast Asia Economic Forum (NEAEF). CSS was a major sponsor and organizer, along with the Hawaiʻi Asia Pacific Institute and UH Sea Grant Program. At one of the gatherings, the emerging leaders were fortunate to hear the Honorable Surangel Whipps Jr., president of Palau, give the keynote address.
President Whipps acknowledged the Palau Economic Advisory Group, on which Dean Denise Eby Konan has been honored to serve since her federal appointment in 2022. “This group is critical to us, because it really looks at policies that would help in economic development – whether it’s revising the tax code, or looking at digital residencies,” said President Whipps. “It’s an objective, third party sounding board, so we’re grateful that Dean Konan accepted the nomination and is helping us.”
Simply outstanding
Harry Partika, recently retired CSS systems manager, is the recipient of the College’s Award for Excellence in Service. Also, the UH Presidential Award for Outstanding Service was bestowed on Elaine Nakahashi, secretary in the Department of Anthropology, at the 2023 Mānoa Awards Ceremony.
