From Hawaiʻi to Glasgow
Marina Karides, a professor in the Department of Geography and Environment, served as an official observer from the American Association of Geographers at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.
Recognition for throwing safety net
Pacific Basin Telehealth Resource Center (PBTRC) and Co-Director Christina Higa were recipients of the 16th annual Supporting the Safety Net Award from the Association for Community Affiliated Plans. PBTRC and Higa were honored for making telehealth services accessible, and significantly improving telehealth access for members with Medicaid and the providers who care for them. The national award is the first for a Hawaiʻi community-based organization.
ID’ing new ancestor to modern humans
International researchers, including Department of Anthropology Chair Christopher Bae, have identified a direct ancestor to modern humans. The new species, Homo bodoensis, provides clarity to the Middle Pleistocene, an important chapter in human evolution.
Funding for disaster risk-reduction
Karl Kim, a Department of Urban and Regional Planning professor and Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance Program director, will lead a project awarded $400,000 to boost efforts on disaster risk-reduction initiatives in Indonesia. The award was granted by Mercy Corps and the Bureau of Humanitarian Affairs in the U.S. Agency for International Development.
