A cultural ambassador in Japan
Alesha Menor, who graduated with a double major in Women’s Studies and Japanese in Spring 2019, is working with elementary students in Hyōgo Prefecture on Awaji Island this semester as part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program. JET is conducted by the Japanese government to recruit international participants to teach English and serve as cultural ambassadors.
Anthropology graduate shines at colloquium
Anthropology graduate Piphal Heng, now a postdoctoral fellow at Northern Illinois University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies, participated in a colloquium hosted by the UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies. Heng offered an alternative approach to archaeological research to explore how Angkor was led with compassion.
DURP takes a bow for ‘Just Play’
A team of faculty in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and School of Architecture earned national recognition for its “Just Play” project, a set of coordinated courses in architecture, landscape architecture and urban and regional planning. The award was the 2021 Course Development Prize in Architecture, Climate Change and Society.
Anniversary gift to benefit students
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, PBR HAWAI‘I made a $50,000 gift to the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, which will establish an endowed scholarship for students.

The changing face of international transportation
The worldwide impacts of COVID-19 on transportation planning and transport operations are covered in an academic journal’s special issue edited by Karl Kim, a professor of urban and regional planning. The 35 articles in the March 2021 Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives range in topics from the impact of COVID-19 on airline travel, cruise ship operations and freight transport, to an analysis of short-term changes in behavior and operations, and longer term impacts and changes in the transportation industry.
Geography faculty appointed co-editor-in-chief
Geography and Environment Associate Professor Mary Mostafanezhad was recently appointed co-editor-in-chief of Tourism Geographies, an international journal of tourism space, place and environment.
