Journalism and Political Science faculty honored
The University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents has recognized Gerald Y. Kato for his distinguished contributions to teaching journalism and protecting the public’s right to know for almost 30 years. Kato, associate professor in the School of Communications and director of the UH Parvin Fellowship Program in Journalism Studies, is the recipient of the 2019 Willard Wilson Distinguished Service Award.
Noenoe Silva, professor in the Department of Political Science – 2020 recipient of the Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching at UH Mānoa. The Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching recognizes Mānoa faculty members who have made significant contributions to teaching and student learning.
Jairus Grove, professor in the Department of Political Science – 2020 recipient of the Peter V. Garrod Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award at UH Mānoa. Established by the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Graduate Division in 2005, the Peter V. Garrod Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award allows graduate students to nominate faculty for excellent mentoring, one of the foundations of outstanding graduate education.
Book earns national Jewish recognition
The Notorious Ben Hecht: Iconoclastic Writer and Militant Zionist (Purdue University Press) by Julien Gorbach, an assistant professor in the School of Communications, was named a finalist for the 2019 National Jewish Book Award in the category of biographies.
Political Science professors win book awards
Two political science professors in the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa have won 2019 Ka Palapala Poʻokela awards from the Hawaiʻi Book Publishers Association.
Noelani Goodyear-Kaʻōpua political science department chair, edited Nā Wāhine Koa: Hawaiian Women for Sovereignty and Demilitarization (UH Press, in association with Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge), which tied for first place in the Hawaiian language culture and history category.
Noenoe K. Silva won first place in the category of Aloha from Across the Sea (out-of-state publishers) for Power of the Steel-tipped Pen: Reconstructing Native Hawaiian Intellectual History (Duke University Press).
Student researcher honored
Psychology’s Joy Agner has received the 2020 Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research Student Award for Excellence in Research at the Doctoral level. The award recognizes her remarkable accomplishments as a junior researcher, as well as her initiative, curiosity and sustained and dedicated engagement in academic inquiry and innovation.
Reconnecting: Mānoa Political Internship Program celebrates 50 years
The Mānoa Political Internships Program will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in Fall 2020. An alumni planning committee has been assembled and is coordinating a possible reunion/celebration.
