Accolades for two CSS department chairs
Wei Zhang of the Department of Sociology was recognized with a 2022 Board of Regents Excellence in Teaching award, and Lani Teves of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies was honored for 2022 Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research and Creative Work at the UH Mānoa Awards ceremony held May 2 at Kennedy Theatre.
Educator/administrator takes on trustee role
Noelani Goodyear-Kaʻōpua, a political science professor and interim assistant vice provost for faculty excellence, has been named a Kamehameha Schools trustee. Her five-year term begins immediately. Goodyear-Kaʻōpua is the first active UH faculty or staff member to serve as a trustee.
Economics alumna named to Board of Education
Lauren Moriarty, who earned her bachelor’s degree in economics at CSS, was recently appointed to the state Board of Education. Her three-year term runs through June 2024.
Among the country’s best graduate schools . . .
In the U.S. News and World Report’s 2023 Best Graduate School rankings, released on March 29, the CSS Public Administration Program ranked No. 88, up nine spots from the previous year, out of 270 graduate programs considered. The ranking puts the program in the top third of all master’s of public administration programs in the country. In addition, the Department of Economics ranked No. 120 in the nation and the Department of Psychology is No. 122.

The 2022 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject places the Department of Anthropology as No. 18 in the U.S., and CSS as among the top 100 in the country in the broad subject area of social sciences. The United Kingdom-based QS is considered one of the most prestigious ranking entities in higher education.
Cherry Blossom queen has CSS ties
Shari Michiko Nishijima, a 2019 graduate in political science and communications, was crowned 70th Cherry Blossom Festival queen. As an undergraduate, Nishijima served as vice president of the Public Relations Society of America UH Mānoa chapter.
Ford Foundation Fellowship recipient
Department of Political Science faculty member Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio has been awarded the prestigious Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship.
