Elaine Nakahashi, a Secretary II in the Department of Anthropology, is the recipient of a UH Mānoa Presidential Award for Outstanding Service by a Civil Service employee.
Honoring a lifetime of work
Reece Jones, professor and chair of the Department of Geography and Environment, has been named a 2023 Fellow by the American Association of Geographers. The lifetime appointment recognizes geographers who have made significant contributions to research, advancement of practice, and careers devoted to strengthening the field, including teaching and mentoring.
Co-editors of Law & Society Review
Two CSS associate professors, Katharina Heyer and Ashley Rubin, have been appointed to three-year terms as co-editors of the Law & Society Review (LSR) journal. Published quarterly by the Law and Society Association, LSRis the premier journal in the field of international law and society. Heyer is an associate professor of political science and Rubin is an associate professor of sociology. Their appointments mark the second time in recent history that the LSR editorship has been led by CSS faculty, and cements the University’s reputation as one of the clear centers of law and society teaching and research. In 2011, Professors Jonathan Goldberg-Hiller (political science) and David Johnson (sociology) began their co-editorship of the journal.
Supporting faculty research
Six CSS faculty received Research Support Awards for Spring 2023. They are principal investigators Steven Bond-Smith in SSRI and UHERO; Patrick Goh in Psychology; Hong Jiang and Aurora Kagawa-Viviani in Geography and Environment, Jonas Vibell in Psychology; and Wei Zhang in Sociology, with co-PIs Yan Yan Wu and Deborah Mattheus.
APEC innovation awardee
CSS alumnus and affiliate faculty member Micah R. Fisher was selected as the U.S. nominee for the APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education in 2022. He was one of 13 finalists for the international ASPIRE science award, which recognizes research that helps society achieve economic, environmental and social goals. Fisher earned his MA from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and PhD from the Department of Geography and Environment. In addition to his current position as a research fellow at the East-West Center, he has also worked as a professional planner and consultant, specializing in water resources, disaster management, and climate change adaptation initiatives with the World Bank, Mercy Corps and various other organizations
Greece is the word
An international organization recognizing the best in food/wine books and media has honored Geography and Environment Professor Marina Karides for her historical and ethnographic knowledge of Greece. Sappho’s Legacy: Convivial Economics on a Greek Isle (SUNY Press) has won a 2023 Gourmand Award in the category of women, and is representing Greece in the awards. She will be honored at the Umeå Food Symposium in Sweden, where she will also compete for the “Best in the World” award in the category of women.
UHERO teams up with city
A public database listing all of Oʻahu’s subsidized and price-restricted housing units will be developed and maintained by UHERO in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu. The Oʻahu housing database will include units still under development and future developments for which subsidies and price or program restrictions have already been allocated. Philip Garboden, Hawaiʻi Community Reinvestment Corporation (HCRC) Distinguished Professor in Affordable Housing/Economics, Policy and Planning, will be UHERO’s project lead.
