August is not only the beginning of our Fall 2021 semester. It is a time for renewed gratefulness after more than a year of health and economic upheaval. In this issue of the College of Social Sciences newsletter, we highlight the many things that we are proud of at CSS, especially your unwavering support and encouragement.
On the research front, there’s the pilot project that established a novel protocol for COVID-19 rapid testing in our schools that attracted $3 million in federal funding. In addition, one of our CSS professors was invited to participate in a podcast with Al Gore, former U.S. vice president, because both are internationally known for their concern about the environment and global warming. We also have exciting news about our excellent showing in recent rankings, and multiple awards and accolades won by students, faculty and graduates.
And, finally, a last bit of good news, which deserves major thanks. Earlier this year, I had the honor of serving as UH Mānoa campaign coordinator for the Hawaiʻi Foodbank Drive. Not only did all 10 UH campuses raise a record amount, but our own College of Social Sciences was the second largest contributor of all UH Mānoa schools and colleges! And this was all accomplished during a pandemic and on a campus that wasn’t teeming with people, as it usually is. We might not be the largest unit but, as far as I’m concerned, we have the biggest heart.
