The College of Social Sciences (CSS) is motivated to serve on three levels: locally, nationally and globally. As individuals, we are most aware of our immediate community, because it’s where we live, work and socialize. We’re also focused on the nation, since Hawai‘i is impacted by federal law and events. And, more and more, there is a genuine interest in the world stage, since learning about other countries and cultures leads to a realization: We can benefit from broadening our international perspectives.

In this October newsletter, we feature three departments that are doing impressive things here and abroad. Locally, advanced-level students in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning are working with a local nonprofit to strengthen self-sufficiency and food sovereignty in Waimānalo. Nationally, the Department of Sociology is leading accelerated research on COVID-19’s mental health impacts on adults. And internationally, the Department of Geography and Environment regularly offers online classes in which half of the students attend virtually from Japan, resulting in a true multicultural and collaborative learning experience.

These stellar departments are just three reasons why we are incredibly proud of the College, and thankful for the continued support received from around the world. Speaking of being thankful, circle November 30 on the calendar for UH Giving Tuesday, a mostly online event held in conjunction with the national day-of-giving movement. Be on the lookout for more info on this exciting 24-hour campaign — which will feature digital appeals, social posts and call center outreach – in support of CSS and its very grateful students.
