Past, present and future. At the College of Social Sciences, we intently focus on these different eras in time with great respect and appreciation. That is particularly true in this CSS Spring 2023 newsletter, as we kick off the new year with a nod to a future graduate; a salute to a current builder of our Native Hawaiian Initiative; and a deep bow to someone who helped grow a distinctive program with roots in the 1960s.
In this January issue, meet Mia Nguyen, an Economics student who started earning college credits – even before first setting foot on the UH Mānoa campus – when she was attending Kealakehe High on Hawaiʻi Island. Also learn about Kamakana Aquino, a CSS staff member who recently won, and then donated to the College, a monetary award that will strengthen the Native Hawaiian community. And, last but not least, a UH Foundation fund pays tribute to the late Franklin Odo, who had a major impact on leading the Department of Ethnic Studies.
Welcome, 2023. We have high hopes that it will be a memorable year for the CSS ʻohana, past, present and future.
