CSS students show leadership

Congratulations to CSS students who were elected to the Associated Students of the University of Hawaiʻi (ASUH) for the 2021-2022 academic year. They include President Jungha Kim, Vice President Alyssa Renteria, and Senators Allurie Joy Almogela, Julia AnuszweskaSarah-Lyn KaeoTina LoosMiriam Salameh and Kylee Takanishi. “I am looking forward to a great comeback this Fall,” said Salameh, a Psychology major. “Due to COVID-19, students have not taken part in any activities for more than a year. As one of the ASUH senators, I hope to change that!”

Journalism grad is AAJA “Voice”

Cassandra “Cassie” Rae Tjaden Ordonio, a recent journalism graduate of the School of Communications, was named a 2021 Voices student fellow by the Asian American Journalists Association. Ordonio and 21 other student journalists, picked from a large pool of national and international applicants, received training and mentorship over the summer from news organizations such as the Los Angeles Times and ESPN. The fellowship’s goal is to increase diversity in journalism and to train the next generation of media to embrace high levels of professionalism and adherence to truth.

CSS students win Telly Awards

For the third year in a row, students have received Telly Awards for UHMtv, the online news series written and produced by journalism students in the School of Communications. This year’s Telly Awards are a significant recognition for the student teams who were in the midst of writing and producing UHMtv when the pandemic abruptly closed the campus and shuttered the state.

Students were honored in the General Television category at this year’s 42nd Annual Telly Awards.

  • Silver Telly Award for UHMtv show No. 22: Produced in Fall 2020 by student producers Aloha Lau and Elizabeth Ufi, with student anchors Sophia Compton and Sami Jo Sexton.
  • Bronze Telly Award for UHMtv show No. 20: Produced in Spring 2020 by student producers Troy Jacobs and Carina Nocon, with student anchors Megan Lucas and Nocon.
  • Bronze Telly Award for UHMtv show No. 19: Produced in Spring 2020 by student producers Ronnie Allen CampmanKeila Lee and Chaz Mihara, with student anchors Campman and Lee.

Fellowships for PhD candidates

Michelle Kawēlau Wright of Geography and Environment has been awarded the Social Science Research Council’s International Dissertation Research Fellowship. Sixty fellowships are awarded annually to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs across the U.S., and who are conducting dissertation research about non-U.S. or U.S. Indigenous cultures and societies.

Borjana Lubura, also in the Department of Geography and Environment, was recognized with the 2021-2022 Nobumoto Tanahashi Peace Fellowships from the Matsunaga Institute for Peace to assist with the completion of her dissertation on migrations along the Western Balkan route.

Rumika Hillyer, a Sociology PhD candidate, was awarded the 2021-2022 UH Center for Japanese Studies Graduate Fellowship. She completed her dissertation fieldwork in Japan and conducted 60+ interviews in the past academic year.
