Excellence in WGSS graduate study
Ha‘åni Lucia Falo San Nicolas, a doctoral student in Political Science’s Indigenous Politics program, has been named to the inaugural 2023 cohort of Mellon/American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Dissertation Innovation Fellows. San Nicolas is also in the advanced graduate certificate program in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Her research focuses on CHamoru ancestral and embodied knowledge.
In addition, San Nicolas and Kamalani Johnson, also a PhD student in Indigenous Politics and in the WGSS advanced graduate certificate program, attended the Summer Institute in Indigenous Studies at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in June.
National geospatial intelligence
Louis Catalano, who is pursuing an Undergraduate Certificate in Geospatial Information Science in the Department of Geography and Environment, has been awarded one of 21 national scholarships from the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation. His interests focus on unmanned aerial systems and their innovative application in geospatial information science, remote sensing and geomatics.
‘Futures’ oriented
Ari Eisenstat, a Political Science PhD student and instructor in the College’s Hawaiʻi Research Center for Futures Studies, had a busy academic year. While pursuing his doctorate, he has presented at the United Nations headquarters on emerging technologies that will help achieve its Sustainable Development Goals; judged the Conrad Challenge aerospace competition at NASA’s center in Houston; lectured at the New Worlds Conference at the University of Texas; and spoke at the Galactic Diversity and Inclusion Conference in Philadelphia, to name just a few accomplishments.
Making the Dean’s List
Congratulations to CSS students who made the Dean’s List in Spring 2023. They have a superior academic record, i.e., earned a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher on 12 credits or more taken for grade.
