Key academic deadlines

Super volunteer

Psychology sophomore Kylie Alarcon, who hopes to pursue a master’s degree in the subject, was profiled by Hawaiʻi News Now reporter Jim Mendoza in January for being a super volunteer. Alarcon started volunteering with the American Red Cross Hawaii chapter when she was just 13 years old. She also coordinates drives for the Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi, has been involved in environmental cleanups, and is a CPR instructor. 

Recognition for coral restoration

The American Association of Geographers has recognized Michelle HarangodyGeography and Environment PhD candidate, with its Graduate Student Affinity Group Research and Support Award for her work on the political ecology of coral restoration in the islands.

Sociology scholars

Graduate students Ying Chen and Joy Lacanienta in the Department of Sociology have been awarded Graduate Dean’s Scholarships. Chen’s thesis is on a qualitative study of Chinese women who practice permaculture in the 21st century. Lacanienta’s dissertation examines the intersections and effects of chronic stressors and trauma on the well-being of mothers of color who are domestic violence survivors.
