Saluting our Ambassadors

Through the College of Social Sciences’ Ambassador Program, student leaders worked creatively throughout the academic year to support both the college and its initiatives. They did this by hosting international student groups, arranging college fairs, helping with recruitment and promoting civic engagement, among other responsibilities. The five 2020-2021 Ambassadors – Korynn GrenertSarah-Lyn KaeoVanessa LiangBevin Martin and Cindy Ng – were asked to share reflections at the end of their service terms.

Being an Ambassador inspired me to connect with like-minded passionate individuals, which made for some amazing friendships. It made me feel as though my voice mattered.

This ambassadorship was very different from my day-to-day academic life. Since I mostly do research, there has not been a lot of chances for me to showcase the leadership skills that I possess.

Prioritizing student engagement and a sense of community throughout these trying times gave me a sense of duty while simultaneously boosting student morale.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ambassadors have helped students stay connected with CSS. Support for one another is essential.

We are working on a Sustainable Saunders project, which will include a space at Saunders Hall for students to relax in, do homework and socialize with one another.

Mentoring in military intelligence

The College of Social Sciences is playing a lead role in a new mentoring program for students in a partnership with the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. The INDOPACOM-UHM Mentoring Program for Intelligence is a unique opportunity to gain exposure and mentorship directly from the people who do intelligence work every day for the federal government.
