A salute to student marshals, Student Employee of Year
Two CSS undergraduates, Psychology majors Eden La‘akea Arthur and Jessica Lau, are serving as undergraduate student marshals at UH Mānoa’s 2023 Commencement on May 13. Student marshals are selected based on their academic achievement and service to the campus and community. Also, Binierose Cacho, a graduating senior with a double major in Economics and Psychology, has been named UH Mānoa 2023 Student Employee of the Year. Cacho worked as a special programs coordinator in Enrollment Management.
Accolades for Journalism students
Students in the School of Communication and Information’s Journalism program have been recognized for excellence in the field with scholarships and a paid national internship. Victoria Budiono is the winner of the $1,500 Carol Burnett Award for Responsible Journalism, which recognizes high ethical standards in the field of journalism. Keya Rivera was selected as a Dow Jones News Fund summer intern, and will spend her paid internship at Pacific Business News (PBN). In addition, about $20,000 in scholarships for the 2023-2024 academic year were awarded to students Eujin Chung, Chandler Cowell, Tori DeJournett, Laurel Galvin, Flynn Hamlin, Lili Hurd, Hi’ilawe Neves, Jordan Kalawaiʻa Nunies and Sarah Tomita.
Crowning achievement
Jason Mark Alexander, a PhD student in Sociology, received the 2023-2024 Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship, which includes a $30,000 award plus $15,000 annual allowance to cover tuition and one-time round trip airfare from Honolulu to Japan. Focus of his project is advocating for democratic justice against authoritarian destruction in Burma.
Making the Dean’s List
Congratulations to CSS students who made the Dean’s List in Fall 2022. They have a superior academic record, i.e., earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher on 12 credits or more taken for grade.
