World-renowned faculty join CSS

CSS continued to recruit renowned faculty from throughout the world. The result was an enriched, dynamic learning environment where students experienced diverse cultures and perspectives, while learning more about themselves and connecting with others. This year the College welcomed Colin Farrelly, Jota Ishikawa, Hyung-hwan Joo and Kozo Kiyota to its ʻohana.

Colin Farrelly (PhD, Bristol University, 1999) is the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Social Sciences, Department of Political Science. His research focuses on bioethics and political theory, including the ethical and social implications of the genetic revolution and ideal/non-ideal theory.

Farrelly is a professor and Queen’s National Scholar at Queen’s University in Canada and has held appointments in departments of Political Science, Philosophy and Public Policy. His previous academic appointments include Visiting Professor in the School of Public Policy at UCLA, research fellow at Oxford University, and appointments at the Universities of Waterloo, Manchester and Birmingham.

Jota Ishikawa (PhD, University of Western Ontario, 1990) is a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Economics. His research interests include trade policies under imperfect competition, and trade and environment.

Ishikawa is Professor of International Economics in the Graduate School of Economics & the Faculty of Economics at Hitotsubashi University. He has received professional honors and awards including the Kojima Kiyoshi Prize from the Japan Society of International Economics (JSIE). Ishikawa has been the President of the JSIE since 2014. He is also a Faculty Fellow of the Research Institute of Economy, Trade & Industry (RIETI) which is a public policy think tank established in 2001.

Hyung-hwan Joo (PhD, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1991) is a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Economics, as well as the Dai Ho Chun Distinguished Chair in the Colleges of Arts & Sciences. His research interests include economic development, industrialization strategies, sustainable energy and trade.

Joo is an invited Professor at Seoul National University. Before that, he served as a career policy maker in the Korean government. Last year he retired from the government as Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, concluding a history of government public service that spanned 34 years. Joo also served as Korea’s Vice Minister of Economy and Finance and Senior Adviser to the President for Economic and Financial matters. He held positions at the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank.

Kozo Kiyota (PhD, Keio University) is a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Economics. His research focuses on international economics (International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment).

Kiyota is a professor of Economics at Keio University in Japan and has numerous publications in top international journals. In 2017, he received the Ishikawa Prize from the Japanese Economic Association, which is an annual award given to a Japanese economist under the age of 50 whose work made a significant contribution to empirical studies and policies in Japan. The award is regarded as one of the most prestigious in the Association. One of his books also received the Nikkei Award for the Best Economics Books in 2015.
