The College of Social Sciences (CSS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UH Mānoa) offers a unique geographical location that allows for substantial exposure to influences from North America, Asia and the Pacific. Its rich combination of disciplines melds culture with science and provides in-depth understanding of the human dimension.
CSS’ relationship with Canada spans many years and includes collaborations with researchers, university-to-university partnerships, and work with government and non-governmental agencies with the goal of enhancing educational exchange. The following are highlights of these connections.

Canadian Colloquium Series
Since 2016, CSS has partnered with Fulbright Canada and the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Plattsburgh on initiatives leading to the development of cutting-edge collaborative research in a rapidly globalizing society.

Student Opportunities
UH Mānoa and CSS have a strong tie with Canadian students through fellowship and exchange programs.
Since 2018, exceptional undergraduates from Canada and the U.S. have been spending one semester or a full academic year as exchange students through the Fulbright Canada Killam Fellowships Program. To date, seven UH Mānoa and nine Canadian students have participated. Other Canadian partner universities include McMaster University, University of Montreal, University of Victoria, University of Toronto, Dalhousie University, Queen’s University, and Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Canadian college students also have benefited from the UH Mānoa International Exchange program’s agreement with the University of British Columbia that was established in 2021.

Visiting Scholars/Exchange Partnerships
Visiting scholar and exchange partnerships foster networking and research between host institutions. A robust program between the UH Mānoa College of Social Sciences and Canada plays a significant role in this effort.
UH Mānoa has hosted the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Social Sciences since 2017. The area of study is open to any discipline within the Social Sciences. Examples of topics include regional cooperation on issues including energy and the environment, Asia Pacific engagement, indigenous issues, information and communication technology, health disparities, policy, and migration.
