Global Scholars Program: Social Sciences Certificate

The Global Scholars Program: Social Sciences Certificate provides students from CSS’s partner universities with a study abroad experience, combining English language training, select UHM courses, and an internship course leading to an academic certificate. The Global Scholars Program will give students an edge in the job market, with a curated set of courses on a unified theme and an off-campus training experience for hands-on social science applications. It will also put them a step closer to a graduate degree at UHM.

The program offers:

  • Immersed, academic English language training
  • Structured coursework centered around a unified theme
  • Student advising from College of Social Sciences experts
  • Student interactions in a highly diverse, multicultural setting
  • Experiential learning (an internship or a practicum) in Hawaiʻi as a culminating experience
  • Course credits that transfer directly back to students’ home university

The program has three major milestones:

Fall 2023 – English Language Training

Students will improve their English proficiency and actively prepare for regular UH Mānoa courses. Participants take English Language courses in the Hawaiian English Language Program (HELP), and take TOEFL tests to satisfy entry requirements.

Spring 2024 – Certificate Coursework

Students will take 12 academic credits to satisfy the requirements for a certificate in one of the following fields:

Students will participate in specified in-person courses with UH Mānoa students.

*Students can pursue a UHM-approved official Certificate in Ethnic Studies or Peace Studies. Students can also pursue an unofficial Certificate in WGSS or Economics.

Summer 2024 – Experiential Learning in Hawaiʻi

For qualified students, CSS provides internship or practicum opportunities in Hawaiʻi’s private sector businesses and non-profit organizations. Students can also pursue a  service learning opportunity. Students will earn 3 credits for successful internship (or service-learning) completion.
